The Woes of Facebook

Posted on November 30th, 2007. Filed under: Daily, Friends & Family, Online & Tech.

This is what I’m particularly talking about. *Taken from bff’s Facebook account, she’s not much of an FB person*

I was all over Facebook early this year sans apps and those crazy invites and everything, when all you had to bother was your wall posts, pokes and what kind of relationship status you had with your friends. It’s not that I’m not happy with applications, but rejecting them has sort of become a daily ritual. Ignore, accept, more ignoring and ignoring again. “Oh I’ll accept this, seems pretty cool whathefuckingever.” I wish they’d tone it down you know? They should have an application quota or something, like 50 max thank you very much. I signed in to Facebook because I thought it was a more intimate way in connecting with my friends who are all over the globe instead of dealing with lousy Friendster and MySpace. Now I’m scared to think, what if Facebook has become one these social networking sites? I’m in denial.

One thing I personally find fun about Facebook this is particular thing called status details:

Whoever thought of this should be given a light-bulb award. At first I was practically in awe by it, how you can categorize relationships, even online. But I’m here to talk about the woes right? So let’s just save this for later.

Frankly I’m not too excited about the bundle and showering application invites I have to deal with everyday. Facebook has its liabilities and assets, people may not agree with me and completely enjoy flooding their profile with applications. One friend IM-ed me the other night and asked if I was going to pull an all-nighter because she wanted to play Texas Hold’em, Poker and Vampires the whole night. Sorry, but I don’t have those applications.

…I love Facebook, but ignore all the applications. I suppose you could say I’m in it for the basics - keeping in touch with friends. Anything else is just time consuming. :P

Reply: I’m the same way with you. I have the applications but I have them disabled in my profile just so I won’t have to deal with invites anymore. The others are soo time consuming I agree.

Facebook scares me. It’s such a violent place. Within my first week there, I was bitten by a vampire, attacked by a werewolf, and had various objects thrown at me. What the hell?

Reply: Hahaha I like the way you put it.

That’s one of the reasons why I’m not as active as before there. When I visit somebody’s facebook to leave a message on the wall, I have to scroll down through tones of idiotic applications no one really cares about:

-the usual basics: info, contact, education
    -zodiac
    -fortune cookies
    -sketch me
    -fun wall
    -superwall
    -superpoke
    -slideshow
    -hot lists
    -hot potato
    -my gifts
    -scrapbox
    -my sexy glitter
    -what my name means
    -glitter
    -more glitter
    -more stuff

And all that it’s interminable, cause yeah, all my friend’s friends posted in those applications, then the scrolling is a neverending story. By the time I got to the good old wall, I forgot what I wanted to say. It’s not that serious and fun anymore. It’s, like you said, becoming a new myspace. Hopefully they won’t let us customize the layout, cause then my friend, it’s over.

Reply: Yes!!! I hope there will be NO profile customization because I will be very very disappointed.

I am well and truly fed up with the invitations I’ve been sent and lord knows what else. I just signed up to interact with people that I know online. I do not need to play zombie, do your quiz, or read anything else. If I ever decide to do any of the invitations (I think I might have once…) I’m kind and don’t pass the favour on.

Reply: Me too, the ones that are totally meh, I just keep on ignoring. What a waste of time.

Okay, I have a facebook and I think you’re my only friend there. Haha! Anyway, I haven’t gotten to really know facebook, but those invitations can really be crazy! :P

    These days, I spend most of my days in a dorm room in Cavite = not very far from the proverbial rock. I haven’t gotten a Facebook account yet. And I was actually under the impression that it was a social networking site. ^^;

I don’t go on FB much anymore. I prefer myspace. I get a lot of invitations like that too. I hate it!

i never liked FB. never will. it’s just plain complicated. for me that is.

The applications made me stop visting FB frequently. I chose not to put them on my profile, but that didn’t stop everyone else from (a) inviting me, and (b) flooding their profile with them. The whole reason I was attracted to Facebook was that it was simpler, cleaner, and there was less profile customization.

Facebook isn’t as good as MySpace. MySpace is over the top and everywhere now, but when it started was when I was graduating high school and it really made it nice to know everyone could stay in touch. Now that’s as much a curse as a blessing, but at least the apps on MySpace are easier to deal with, and the site is easier to navigate. They do seem to be ripping off some of FB’s apps lately though, so I hope that stops.

Going through the applications is definitely trying!!! I mean, some are alright, but many are just the same thing over and over again! Vampires, ninjas, slayers, pirates?! What?!

I love Facebook. I just hate the useless apps everybody’s flooding my inbox about.

i agree! facebook is just getting too much. the only thing i keep playing there is scrabble & rockpaperscissors. just to kill time. heh. other than that, all those invites for various applications are just wayyyy too much. just a day of not logging into facebook, & there’s a whole lotta requests.. freakyyy!

I don’t know enough about Facebook to comment. I don’t have an account… I feel tempted to sign up, but I feel that right now… there’s not enough of me and time to spread digitally… Probably will suck a lot of time.

I have an account in FB but I don’t use it just because I only know 3 people who have it so it’s pretty useless. However, there’s a new Spanish site called Tuenti which works like FB but it’s so much smaller and only has the basics. I like it and I hope it doesn’t change into another Facebook!

Nice blog, by the way :)

The applications annoy the shit out of me. I think that’s particularly the reason why I haven’t logged in for a while. Seeing my dashboard cluttered with invites just irks me.

It’s so convenient to just ignore the notifications and invites. hehe

Never used Myspace, Friendster or FaceBook, so I don’t have the slightest clue how you feel. :P Stick to msn to stay in toch. ;)

I just signed up on Facebook recently and I would like to say that it’s way better than Friendster. But yes, there are plenty of useless applications that could waste my time for other stuff.

Maybe I could use those when I’m on bummer mode, which happens rarely nowadays because I have a lot of things to work on [i.e. Algebra subject. LOL.]. Oh well. I just hate that those invitations are cluttered with the more important ones, like the friend requests, etc.

    Foly. Huck.

90% of applications I’ve encountered on Facebook have worn out their appeal; did a massive clean-up of everything yesterday - it’s amazing, how much crap you can accrue on something like that. I’m pretty much the same; FB’s for keeping up with friends. It’s nuts, the way it’s going.

GAH! You beat me to this. I had the post all saved an everything. ;)
    I hate Facebook applications.

They irritate the shit out of me, especially that zombie vampire bite one. CAN YOU GET MORE USELESS THAN THAT? I despise them all. I hate it when people invite me to groups I have zero interest it. I hate it when my “friends” recommend applications. STOP IT!

What I hate the most is how Facebook is turning into another Myspace. Which leads me to conclude that I just hate social networking sites in general. :P

I love Facebook since I have all my Norwegian friends, classmates and love ones there but I do hate all those apps and unnecessary invites. I usually just ignore them!
