My Verdict on Turning 20

Posted on May 18th, 2008. Filed under: Daily, Rantage.

Please cut me some slack. I’ve always had this thing about turning older each year, I tend to make a big deal out of it. There’s nothing to really make a big deal of since age is just a number but it’s kind of like this ongoing thing happening every year since I turned 16 that I can’t seem to shrug it off anymore. It’s stuck, so here are my thoughts: I’m extra terrified of the big 2-0. Mainly because the word “teen” doesn’t exist anymore so it shouts responsibilities!, maturity! and of course the ever popular one with us Asians: graduation! Please. I don’t graduate ’til next year (that IS if I do) but since I’m the eldest grandchild in the maternal side, it’s a pretty big weight on my shoulder.

Turning older aside, birthdays don’t excite me the way it used to ever since I turned 19 last year. It’s gradually becoming a semi-tedious tradition especially now that time is moving OH SO FAST and the next thing I know I’m going to be 21 next year and my triple-x-strike is over. That’s pretty much it really, I don’t even have birthday plans yet and what’s worse, I have a full day of class from 8:30am - 5:30pm on that day. Ouch. What a way to spend being 20 huh?

That’s why mark your calendars for the 21st of May coz I’m gonna need a whole lotta consolation.

I’m a living proof that turning 20 doesn’t have to mean maturity :-P

Ever since I reached puberty, I thought of birthdays are not worth celebrating. Maybe it’s because I really don’t meet my perfect idea for a birthday party believer (ambitious?)or I’m just tired to party out or just dine with my friends and relatives. But I still celebrate it anyway because that means another year of me existing… And the people I consider “my dearest” gives a damn on my existence.

But I feel that I’ll be experiencing your situation when I reach 19 or 20 (which will be in a few years) since I’ll be graduating at that age (if I won’t be failing my upcoming classes). No more teen slacker, hello real world. Maturity and all shit, early wake-up calls and overnight work… I must face them. Grr.

I guess that’s why I’m enjoying being a teenager now. Lol.

    Happy Birthday! :)

I’ve made a big deal about my birthday ever since I was 17.
I love celebrating my birthday though I’ve disliked getting older since I turned 17. But at the same time, I acknowledge that life and growing old, despite all the hangups, is still a privilege.

Find a way to enjoy your day. Cheers. :)

Dude, your birthday is five days before mine. Later May babies FTW!

Happy Early Birthday? Can’t say I feel exactly the same about turning 18, since in Australia, the age of 18 just screams “ALCOHOL! ALCOHOL! VOTING! ALCOHOL! ALCOHOL! … ALCOHOL!”. But ’tis understandable all the same. :D

I was in denial when I reached twenty. When somebody asked me how old I was then, I would always say “I’m only twenteen.” XD

anyway, hope you still have fun on your birthday despite the full day of class.

    WTF I’m 25.

Also, “teen” exists with 20. Just say twenteen.

Well, Advance Happy Birthday to you! w00t!

I think I’m starting to get tired of celebrating my birthdays. I don’t know why. Blah. I just hope by the time I’ll turn 20 I would be able to accept that I’m no longer a teen. Haha. But then again, I’m sure, I’ll still look like a teen by then. Haha.

Ade: I wonder how I’ll feel when I’m about to turn 25. WOW.

Responsibility was thrust upon me at too much an early when tragedy hit my family. And then I sort up gave up on my personal dreams for a long time… as I had to step up to the plate… My sense of decency, honor and love (sometimes, I wish I was more of a selfish bastard, lol)… kicked in to fulfill family obligations. I drowned for years… and I’m only now just resurfacing.

If even 1/8 of the shit that happened to me never happens to you… then I’ll just say… you’ve had a very good life so far. :)

Later days. I’ll be back to wish you a Happy Birthday. :)

Aww, happy birthday, Juice! I never really make a big deal out of my birthdays, they’re always just a little fun with a little cake and a tiny get-together. And besides, only because it seems to scream “maturity, responsibility, etc” it doesn’t mean you have to be mature and responsible all the time!

Oh, happy birthday for tomorrow! Haha, I’m 15 and I want to be older… I think you’re putting me off it! :P

So…I missed these birthday posts…it was right smack dab in the middle of my finals week.

    Happy Birthday!

I’m not much older than you at all but, really, there’s not much to be afraid of, partly because I don’t think we EVER grow up. We just start being called “adults” more often, but yeah, I think that’s just a label.

I honestly have to stop and think for a few seconds to remember how old I am every birthday. I don’t think I’ll think of age until I hit 30, and every decade after that.
